Who we are
Marshall Van Zandt began with a belief that strong businesses and strong communities are built on strong foundations—financially, operationally, and structurally. What started as a vision for providing high-level virtual accounting support quickly evolved into something much more comprehensive: a service model designed to bring clarity, order, and reliability to both the administrative and physical sides of an organization. From the beginning, the heart of MVZ has been a commitment to helping clients feel supported, empowered, and fully equipped to make confident decisions.
The story of MVZ is also a story of two professionals whose strengths complement one another in a way that brings uncommon value to the businesses and communities they serve. Melissa’s background in accounting leadership, financial strategy, and system management brought structure, insight, and clarity to clients navigating growth and complexity. As her work expanded and more organizations began asking not only for financial guidance but also for help maintaining their properties and facilities, it became clear that many clients needed a more holistic solution—someone who could support the numbers and the day-to-day realities of managing physical assets.
That is when Kyle joined the vision. With years of hands-on maintenance, facility oversight, and skilled repair experience, he brought practical, dependable expertise that grounded the financial strategy in real-world execution. Together, Melissa and Kyle formed a service model that reflects the true needs of the modern small business and community association: accurate books paired with reliable property care; clear data paired with well-maintained facilities; strategic planning paired with someone who can literally turn the wrenches, oversee the projects, and keep the physical operation running smoothly.
This combined approach allows MVZ to support clients at every level—whether a business needs a fractional controller to guide its financial growth, or an HOA needs someone to prepare the board packets and ensure the pool is maintained and the grounds look their best. For nonprofits, small businesses, real estate operations, HOAs, and medical or service-based organizations, this dual support system creates stability. Clients don’t just receive numbers or maintenance—they receive a partnership built on trust, communication, and a shared goal of long-term success.
At its core, Marshall Van Zandt exists to simplify the complicated, steady the uncertain, and strengthen the systems that help communities and businesses thrive. Whether Melissa is bringing order to a complex financial landscape or Kyle is restoring function to a property in need of care, both sides of MVZ operate with the same philosophy: clarity, reliability, and integrity form the backbone of good stewardship.
Today, MVZ continues to grow because clients don’t just hire a service—they join a relationship rooted in stability and support. By providing expert financial leadership alongside dependable maintenance and facility management, Melissa and Kyle ensure that organizations can move forward with the confidence that both their books and their buildings are in good hands.
Meet Our Founder: Melissa Marshall
The story of MVZ begins with Melissa Marshall, whose career in accounting and financial leadership spans more than a decade and is rooted in a deep appreciation for order, clarity, and meaningful guidance. From the beginning, Melissa gravitated toward roles that required precision, problem-solving, and the ability to bring structure to complex environments—qualities that would later define the MVZ approach. Her professional path has taken her through public accounting, nonprofit organizations, real estate operations, governmental entities, and privately held small businesses, giving her a broad, real-world understanding of how different organizations function and what they need to operate successfully. But it was her six-plus years as Controller at Arrowhead Lake Association that shaped the foundation of what MVZ would eventually become.
At ALA, Melissa learned firsthand how complicated financial environments can become—and how transformative the right systems and leadership can be. She oversaw multimillion-dollar operations, managed full-cycle accounting, strengthened financial infrastructure, and established internal controls that brought consistency and accountability to the organization. She planned long-term financial strategies, led major process improvements, and crafted clear, actionable reports for the board during periods of rapid change and organizational growth. Her work during federally recognized disaster years, when the association faced unprecedented operational and financial challenges, reinforced her belief that transparency and discipline are not simply accounting principles—they are organizational lifelines. Through these experiences, Melissa developed a deep respect for the role of financial clarity in steadying an organization through both everyday operations and extraordinary circumstances.
Before taking on her leadership role at ALA, Melissa gained invaluable training in public accounting at Smith Marion & Co. and VLS LLP, where she supported a wide range of audits, tax engagements, and consulting services. These roles exposed her to diverse industries and sharpened her ability to analyze systems, identify weaknesses, and recommend solutions that strengthened financial accuracy and compliance. Her early leadership at the University of La Verne, including her time mentoring students through the Society of Accountants, nurtured her passion for teaching and guiding others—a theme that would follow her into her client relationships. Later, her advanced coursework at the London School of Economics broadened her analytical approach and deepened her understanding of global financial frameworks, further shaping her strategic mindset.
Over time, Melissa developed a reputation as someone who could walk into financial chaos and bring structure, logic, and long-term stability. She became the person boards and business owners turned to when they needed clarity—someone who could untangle the numbers, rebuild systems from the ground up, and turn confusion into confident decision-making. Her clients valued not only her technical skill, but also the calm, steady professionalism she brought to each challenge. It was this reputation, built one relationship at a time, that ultimately inspired her to create a firm dedicated not only to accurate books, but to empowering the people behind them—helping leaders build stronger organizations through clearer financial understanding.
Meet Our Maintenance & Facilities Manager: Kyle Van Zandt
As Melissa refined the financial side of the business, she began receiving more inquiries from organizations that needed help not just with their books, but with the physical care of their properties—HOAs, community associations, and businesses with ongoing facility needs. Boards and business owners were increasingly searching for someone who could not only maintain accurate records but also maintain the environments their communities depended on. That’s when Kyle Van Zandt became an essential part of the MVZ story.
Kyle brings a practical, grounded expertise that perfectly complements Melissa’s analytical strength. His background includes years of hands-on property and facility maintenance, skilled repairs, carpentry, grounds care, pool operations, and machinery handling—all supported by a natural ability to troubleshoot issues on the spot. His work across large resort-style environments, residential properties, and community settings has given him a deep understanding of what it takes to keep a property functioning safely, smoothly, and efficiently. In these settings, reliability isn’t just appreciated—it’s required—and Kyle has built his reputation on showing up consistently, solving problems thoroughly, and taking pride in the work that often goes unseen but is always felt.
What makes Kyle’s role so essential is the depth of care and attentiveness he brings to each project. His contributions extend far beyond basic maintenance tasks. He has a talent for diagnosing issues before they escalate, catching the small details that others overlook, and implementing solutions that prevent costly repairs down the road. His calm, methodical approach keeps repair projects on track, coordinated, and completed with care, ensuring that communities experience minimal disruption while receiving high-quality results. Whether he is preparing a pool for the season, restoring a damaged structure, shaping the appearance of community grounds, or operating heavy equipment, Kyle approaches each job with craftsmanship and a standard of dependability that homeowners, tenants, and board members immediately trust.
Kyle also excels in environments where multiple contractors and vendors must work together. He monitors progress, ensures safety measures are followed, communicates clearly with stakeholders, and advocates for the community’s best interests. His oversight brings confidence to large-scale projects, particularly those that involve intricate timelines or substantial investments.
In many ways, Kyle embodies the same philosophy Melissa applies to financial management: take what is overwhelming, unclear, or falling behind—and restore order, reliability, and long-term stability. His work ensures that the physical side of an organization is as strong and well-supported as the financial side, creating a seamless partnership that lies at the heart of MVZ’s identity.
